Cheddar, Stilton, Brie… smoky, garlic, tomato… there are hundreds of different cheeses - and the New Forest is home to some of the best local cheese producers!
Lyburn Cheese, based in Landford, are one of the most well known cheesemakers in the New Forest. With their popular Lyburn Gold, Stoney Cross and Winchester cheeses, you’ll definitely want to try their delicious creations. There are lots of other local cheesemakers in the New Forest too.
You can purchase local cheeses to eat and use in your own dishes at home from lots of local shops, including Hockey’s Farm Shop, Cat & Fiddle Farm Shop and many more. Our weekly town and village markets and regular farmers markets are also great places to pick up local cheeses, or at our fantastic food and drink events in the New Forest, where you will always find a local cheese stall! Another way to try local cheeses is buy ordering a local hamper, full of local goodies, usually including cheese!
Lots of the local pubs, restaurants and cafes use local cheese in their dishes. From tasty cheese sandwiches, cheese boards, toppings on lasagnes and shepherd's pies and mouth-watering cheese souffles, there’s a whole host of dishes across their menus that use our amazing cheeses.
Christmas is a great time to try out lots of different locally made cheese, with cheese and crackers being a popular food across the festive season! Or in the spring and summer you can sit in our pub gardens or restaurants terraces, with a refreshing drink in hand and a cheese board to graze through while catching up with friends. One of the best, and easiest, ways to enjoy our local cheese (especially an extra mature cheddar) is in the ultimate cheese toastie, perfect for a warming lunch in the autumn.
